Blogs > Shopkick – Coming to a Store Near You

I came across an article on an iPhone (Smartphone) app called Shopkick. After a struggle trying to find and download the app, I discovered it is currently available in the US only.
People using the Shopkick app will get points for entering a store, try something on and you’ll get more points. Great for those of you who love to shop. These points are called kickbucks. The points can be used for gift cards, music downloads and facebook games. Retailers see this app as a sophisticated marketing opportunity.
Unlike Foursquare, Shop kick advises retailers when shoppers are actually inside the store.
The software is installed in store and listens for an audio transmitter. The iPhones (Smartphone) microphone can pick up the signal, which people cannot hear.
The software was created under the guidance of CEO and co-founder Cyriac Roeding. According to Roeding, his thoughts centered around offering a reward for the people who actually visit the store.
As with all apps these days, Privacy or lack there of is an issue. Roeding’s view is that since the consumer has to turn the app on, that there is agreement in the action. Remember the device does not detect your iPhone, the iPhone detects the device in the store.
Many more of these kinds of applications are coming in the months and years ahead. Retailers will love to know when the consumer is actually in store, no better time to make your best offer! Currently Shopkick is operating in New York City, Los Angeles, San Franciso and Chicago.
