1. Identify the decision maker

• You want to talk to someone with the power to give you, or help you get, what you want.

2. Work your network for a “warm” lead

• New people = new opportunities

3. Write clearly, briefly and memorably

• Keep it simple and to the point

4. Spell out the next step

• Close with a specific call to action. Tell the person what you want.

5. Follow up, follow up, follow up!

• Follow up in reasonable increments of time, contribute something new to the conversation, and use a friendly tone. Be careful not to come across as desperate.
