2. ABOUT THE EXPEDITION
i. What is the OceanGate Expeditions Titanic Expedition?
OceanGate Expeditions is a company dedicated to deep sea research and documentation of important archaeological sites that are located deep in the oceans around the world. OceanGate Expeditions uses crewed submersibles to directly observe deep ocean sites of interest. The Titanic Expedition is a multi-year study and documentation effort designed to preserve the Titanic’s memory through images, videos, and studies of the marine ecosystem that lives on and around the wreck site.
ii. What will I do during the Titanic Expedition?
You will have the opportunity to play an active role as a crewmember for the expedition called a Mission Specialist. The Titanic Expedition is conducted as a series of 8-day missions that begin and end in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The expedition ship returns to port at the end of each mission to embark a new team of Mission Specialists, content experts, and any necessary provisions or equipment needed to continue the expedition.
During the transit time from St. John’s to the dive site, each team of six Mission Specialists participates in the ship’s orientation program so that everyone is familiar with the ship’s officers, safety procedures, and generally how things work aboard the vessel. Mission Specialists also participate in training in various operational roles. This training may continue throughout the mission depending on each person’s level of interest. Mission Specialists will meet scientists and Titanic experts who will present daily on the history and current condition of the wreck, the marine life on the wreck, and objectives for upcoming dives. iii. What does a Mission Specialist do?
A Mission Specialist participates as an expedition crewmember. Before the expedition, Mission Specialists will have access to video calls and on-line training resources. During the expedition, they receive hands-on skills training so that they can effectively support the scientists and operations team.
iv. Can my family contact me during the expedition?
Yes. Wi-Fi will be available aboard the vessel for simple text emails. We also bring a satellite phone and a handheld GPS tracker that can send text messages which you can use if needed. The sat phone number and instructions will be posted in the crew portal of the web site. In an urgent situation your family can contact the ship’s captain via a ship to shore telephone system.
v. What sea conditions can I expect?
Sea conditions vary from day to day, and sometimes hour to hour. Wind speed, wind direction, temperature, precipitation, currents, and prevailing swell combine to create conditions that range from flat calm to rolling seas to rough seas that exceed our ability to safely operate the submersible. The vessel captain and expedition leader will continuously monitor conditions and evaluate our status to ensure crew safety and comfort.
vi. What are the physical and other requirements to join the expedition?
Mission Specialists must:
- Be at least 18 years of age when the mission begins.
- Be able to live aboard the Support Ship at sea for 8 days.
- Be able to climb six flights of stairs from working to the bridge
- Be able to board small boats (Zodiacs) in rough seas.
- Be able to demonstrate basic strength, balance, and flexibility (i.e. climb a 6- foot ladder, carry 20 lbs., etc.)
- Please refer to rules & regulations regarding other requirements.
viii. Is there a doctor on board?
Yes, there is a doctor on board. The wreck site of the Titanic is 380 nautical miles offshore, out of range of emergency medical response services. For this reason, there will be a doctor on board for the duration of the expedition. The ship has basic medical facilities and supplies.
