It’s hard to escape hashtags. They are everywhere on social media. That’s one of the many benefits of running hashtag contests. For businesses looking to grow their social followings, a hashtag contest is a great way to generate user generated content (UGC). Need more reasons to use contest marketing?
A hashtag contest can be utilized on almost any social media platform. Here are some tips from each social network:
Instagram Hashtag Contests
- Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is “no way sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Instagram” (be sure to include a link in your profile)
- Do not inaccurately tag content or encourage people to do the same
Twitter Hashtag Contests
- Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is not sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Twitter
- Discourage people from creating multiple accounts (include in the rules)
- Discourage people from tweeting the same message (Twitter recommends limit entrants to one entry per day)
Facebook Hashtag Contests
- Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is not sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Facebook
- The contest has to be on a business page
- You can ask people to comment on a post or a page, message a page or Like a post or page
- You cannot ask people to simply like a page to enter, or share a page to enter
- Also cannot ask people to tag themselves in a photo of your product or share to a friend’s page for more entries
